What to expect

Caesarean section, also called C-section, is a surgical procedure in which a baby is removed from the womb through an incision in the mother's abdomen.

Here is what to expect after a C-section delivery:

  • The pain is typically worst on the first day after surgery, then it should begin to subside.
  • Vaginal discharge is normal.
  • Drink plenty of water each day -- between eight and 10 glasses.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and climbing stairs.
  • Don't drive until you can wear a seat belt comfortably.
  • Call your doctor if the incision site becomes red and swollen.
