Strains and Sprains of the Limbs

Possible Symptoms:

  • pain and tenderness in the joint or muscle
  • swelling and redness of a joint or muscle
  • bruising around a joint or muscle
  • difficulty moving a joint or muscle

Strained muscles and sprained ligaments are commonly the result of overuse, sports activity, or trauma. Playing a sport on an occasional basis is the most common cause. Using R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) immediately will help speed your recovery. These soft tissue injuries should slowly improve over a period of 1 week. Returning to regular activity too early may prolong an injury. Be aware that early in the day may be one of the most difficult times due to the stiffness that can develop as a result of being inactive throughout the night. Give yourself time to improve over the morning hours.
