Dr. Bernard Zinman, MDCM
Dr. Bernard Zinman is professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also the director of the Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes and holds the Sam and Judy Pencer Family Chair in Diabetes Research at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto.
His research includes the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus, the development of new therapies for Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes and diabetes in Aboriginal communities. From 1993 to 2000, Dr. Zinman was director of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre and is involved with diabetes care and research at both a national and international level. He is the principal investigator of the University of Toronto Centre for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications study.
He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes (awarded to investigators in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial), the Alois Beringer Lecture Award and the Frederick G. Banting Award of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).
Dr. Zinman has authored more that 290 articles for national and international journals, and over 50 book chapters and editorials. A member of many professional organizations like the Canadian and American Diabetes Associations, Dr. Zinman also currently serves on the editorial board for Diabetes Care, Clinical Diabetes, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, and Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.
